About this Bake

This was a classic vanilla birthday cake made from three layers baked in 10" pans. It was covered in Swiss meringue buttercream, homemade fondant and topped with a homemade marzipan caterpillar.

Top tip

Bake the layers in advance and freeze them in plastic wrap and foil. Make the fondant in advance and store in an airtight container with the shapes kept flat separated by plastic wrap. Make the marzipan in advance, store in fridge, and allow to warm slightly before tinting and forming shapes.
