I was asked to make this for a friend of a friend's little boy's 7th birthday. First I baked an 8" round layer along with the base of a giant cupcake (both were classic vanilla sponge). Then they were layered together, shaped, chilled and decorated...

Top tip

Plan out the different stages in advance. Carve and shape, cover with buttercream and refrigerate for 1 hour at least. It makes the cake easier to work with if it is thoroughly chilled before decorating.
